Introduction

This chapter introduces the description, features and application areas of Raspberry Pi 3G/4G & LTE Base HAT.

3G/4G & LTE mini PCIe modules can be inserted into the Base HAT, which then acts as a bridge between the Raspberry Pi and the cellular modem. The cellular HAT enables simplified data connectivity for remote IoT projects in the field, worldwide. It provides high-speed LTE connectivity with low power consumption in a compact form factor and includes all necessary software for Raspberry Pi. A mini PCIe module is required for operation.

Description

The Sixfab 3G/4G & LTE Base HAT provides a simple interface bridge between Raspberry Pi or 40-pin compatible single-board computers and mini PCIe cellular modems. When a mini PCIe modem is inserted into the Base HAT, Raspberry Pi–based projects can access cellular data networks worldwide.

This Base HAT supports high-bandwidth cellular connectivity on remote devices, ranging from low-power LTE-M to ultra-high-speed LTE-Advanced mini PCIe modules. Both UART and USB communication with cellular modules are supported.

With the Base HAT, remote devices can be securely managed in the field, providing reliable global coverage and multiple carrier options. It can function as an LTE modem or dongle. Applications include high-speed data transfer, video streaming, LTE Wi-Fi hotspots, GPS tracking and other IoT use cases requiring mobile connectivity.

Features

  • Plug-and-Play Setup: Easily integrate with various Pi models (A+/ B+/ Pi 2/ Pi 3/ Pi 4/ Pi 5/ Zero).

  • Ideal for Development: Suitable for PoC, prototyping and pilot production.

  • Global IoT Connectivity: Seamlessly link Raspberry Pi to Mini PCIe modem modules.

  • Fast LTE Data: High-speed connectivity between modem with optimized power efficiency.

  • Unlocked SIM Compatibility: Exposed micro SIM card slot for flexible data options.

  • It can be used standalone with a PC/Laptop over micro USB, without stacking with Raspberry Pi.

  • The HAT can be powered from an external 5V source by exposed power pins, directly from Raspberry Pi 5V GPIO headers, via micro USB, or optional JST connector on the bottom of the board. A specially designed 90-degree right-angle micro USB cable is included in to package.

  • Efficient and low quiescent current power circuit can hold up to 3Amps.

  • Optional Send/Receive AT commands over Raspberry Pi UART port is available.

  • Taking the module into the Airplane Mode, resetting module or RI and DTR functions can be accessible over GPIO pins.

  • The power of the whole board electronics can be disabled for low-power consumption use cases.

  • Certified & Ready: Pre-certified with FCC, CE, RoHS for hassle-free deployment.

  • Working temperature range: -40°C ~ 80°C.
